Colombian Leader Declares 'I Will Take Up Arms Again' if United States Invades.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have escalated the rhetoric of their exchange, heightening tensions bilaterally after US forces attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs narcotics facilities and processing labs and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Growing Tensions coupled with Accusations

Talking to reporters on Sunday, Trump suggested comparable use of force towards the South American nation, asserting the country is also "very ill" and governed by a problematic figure who enjoys creating cocaine and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the illicit industry.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation has long been a close partner of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, however, the relationship have worsened dramatically since Trump assumed the presidency.

The nation's narcotics trade is predominantly run by criminal organizations like the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters laid down arms following a landmark accord.

Petro's Strong Answer

In response to a query whether military intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who demobilised in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he affirmed.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he expressed in a post.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the people," he admonished.

From Insurgent to President

He passed part of his youth participating of the leftist M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed to have ever engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he was involved in drafting a new constitution in 1991 subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the capital city prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I pledged not to touch a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I will take up arms again," he vowed.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief reported that Petro's security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump, however, leaders spanning Colombian politics have condemned the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Economic Strains

American authorities withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he called on American soldiers to ignore orders that violate law. In October, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and various key allies.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its troop levels near Venezuela and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out operations on boats in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
