"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile fans have openly petitioned for the position.

The band are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record was born from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics follow departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That developed toughness demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The trio's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global audience.

However the band will consistently be their top commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
