Users Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
