Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
