On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
